From the Desk of Ken Craw:
Opening of School:
We had a very successful opening of the new school year!
Sixth grade students participated in a number of activities designed to help them transition to their new school. They spent most of the day with their period 1 class and teacher learning the “ropes” of middle school life. In addition, both sixth grade teams held their first community meeting to discuss team expectations, reflect on the day and answer questions. These meetings are held periodically throughout the year in sixth grade as a vehicle to set team goals, build a strong sense of community and recognize student accomplishments.
In all grades, students received their daily planners, which they should use on a daily basis. Teachers reviewed how the planner should be used as a way for students to organize their assignments. Students have been reminded that the teacher websites are an additional resource for information regarding assignments, but it is not a substitute for writing assignments down in their notebooks.
Afternoon Pick-Up Reminder:
As a reminder, we ask that parents remain in their cars during the afternoon pick-up process in order to ensure everyone’s safety. As directed by the safety monitor, please pull your car up to enter our pick up loop where your child will come to the vehicle.
Message Center - New This Year
Students are responsible for ensuring that they have all their necessary materials prior to coming to school. On days when a parent or guardian may need to deliver a message or something that a student may have forgotten and need for class, they will be directed to leave a message (or item) at our message center located next to the security station. This procedure will ensure that classroom instruction is not interrupted during the course of the day. An announcement will be made at the end of Period 3 (10:24) class for students who have “messages” to retrieve them at the message center. Remember, it is a student’s responsibility to ensure that they have all of the necessary materials they need in preparation for class. There will be no other announcements made during the day for message center pickups or interruptions made to the classroom.
Handbooks and Important Forms
During our first two days of school, important information was distributed to all students, including handbooks, forms and other notices. These forms can also be found on the front page of our website. Many of the forms must be filled out, signed by a parent or guardian and returned to school in a timely manner. Students received their daily planner that they should use to record their homework assignments. All students received a copy of our Student/Parent Handbook to take home and review with parents. Students must sign the Handbook Contract Form along with their parents and return it to their period 1 teacher no later than September 13.
Parent/Student information forms were mailed and are due back now.
School Photos
School Picture Day is set for Wednesday, September 8. Picture forms were distributed to students on the first day of school. Parents interested in purchasing picture packages should complete the form and sent it along with their child for their photo sitting to turn it in to the photographer. All students whether they are purchasing pictures or not will have their photo taken.
Study Skills Workshop
Attached please find information about a three-day after school workshop that will be held at Weston Middle School focusing on study skills for students. The workshop is being offered by S4 - Successful Study Skills 4 Students, LLC. Please use the contact information on the flyer. S4 is opening up a third section due to the number of students that have registered, which will allow students to be separated by grade. S4 is limited class sizes to 15 students.

We have a short week next week with school closed for Labor Day on Monday and for Rosh Hashanah on Thursday.
Have a enjoyable Labor Day weekend!!
FROM THE DESK OF NADINE KERNS, WMS PTO PRESIDENT
Welcome to the Middle School. I hope your children are settling in to the new school year!
I would like to take a moment to thank Elizabeth Pocsik and Anne Troxell, our Staff Appreciation Day Chairs for coordinating a beautiful back to school luncheon for our teachers. I would also like to thank Deb Carey, Philanthropy Chair and Leigh Meccay, Treasurer, for distributing the back to school teacher checks to the middle school staff. These checks help defray some of the out of pocket expenses associated with setting up their classrooms.
A big thank you to Isabelle Alvarado for streamlining the PTO Membership process this year and to Tammy Roberts, the WMS Membership chair, who is coordinating the effort at the school. It’s not too late to join! Visit westonct-pto.org and register online.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the back to school nights, as well as our first PTO meeting on September 21 at 8:45. Superintendent Jerry Belair will be speaking.
Finally, If you see a child running around with a blue and gold costume on, don’t think it’s already Halloween! Thanks to Alina Petroni, the middle school has a mascot: The Weston Warrior! Look for him at school functions throughout the year! Fondly, Nadine Kerns
PHOTO DAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
